This course focuses on understanding Arabic language policies in the Arab world, including legislation, language planning, and contemporary challenges facing the language in education, media, and technology. It also addresses efforts to Arabize the sciences, linguistic identity, and the status of Arabic in official and international institutions.
General proficiency in Arabic (reading and writing). • Interest in issues of language, identity, and culture. • A background in linguistics or politics is not required.
